Obituary:

Donald Miller, age 75 of Kenosha, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at the Hospice House.

He was born November 30, 1936 to the late Joseph and Evelyn (Meredith) Miller in Chicago, Illinois. He was educated in Union Grove and graduated from high school there in 1955. Shortly after graduating, he went to work for the American Motors Corporation. His six years of service at AMC was interrupted by a two year, all expense paid vacation to Okinawa, Japan with the U.S. Army. He married his sweetheart, Carol Nienhaus, on April 11, 1959 just prior to being drafted into service on August 19, 1959. During his tour he qualified as Marksman, received the Good Conduct Medal, and received an honorable discharge in July 1961.

Continuing to work at AMC full time, Don attended night school and earned a business degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1967. In 1970 he was licensed as a C.P.A. His professional career included working for Fonteine McCurdy & Co., Arthur Young & Co., Pfister & Vogel, and Seymour & Seymour. From 1985-2007 Don went into business for himself as a C.P.A. His professional affiliations included the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Kenosha Rotary Club West, and Kenosha Serra Club.

Don enjoyed golf and bowling, but most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren, family, and friends.

Don is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Carol; his two sons Brian (Jan) Miller and Keith (Kimberly) Miller; his daughter Dawn (Sean) Dolan; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild and another great grandchild due in June. Also surviving him are two sisters, Rita Ziolkowski and Bonnie Dubanski, and his brother Edward Miller.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Norbert Miller, Joseph Miller and Evelyn Squires.

Sure am going to miss you Ducky. We go way back to 1st grade at Union Grove Graded School. Graduated together there, and went on to UGHS and graduated there. What a pleasure it was to know you and hang around in High School. It was so nice to meet Carol, and know her all these years too. God Bless, Ruth

During his address at the graduation ceremony of Union Grove's tiny Class of 1955, Principal William Homburg announced that some of the "greatest individuals" he had ever known sat there before him in their caps and gowns. And when Homburg spoke, Homburg meant it. The man's reputation for mincing students, not words, had already become legendary. Although he didn't name names that evening, Principal Homburg unquestionably counted Donald B. Miller as one of the great individuals sitting before him. So did -- and do -- his surviving classmates. Among them is me, whose very good fortune it was to know Don since 1951. It is now, I regret, my misfortune to mourn his passing. Death, be not proud. Deepest, heartfelt sympathy to Don's beloved Carol and family. You've lost, I know, a great and good husband, father and friend. Courage. Your memories of him will become your consolation. MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO CAROL AND THE FAMILY. I WORKED WITH DON AND CAROL FOR MANY YEARS. I WAS NUMB WHEN HE SAID HE WAS GOING TO RETIRE, I KNEW THAT REPLACING HIM WOULD BE A HARD TASK. AND I WAS RIGHT. OUR NEW ACCOUNTANT HAS THE COMPUTERS AND FANCY OFFICE, BUT THEY ARE NOT DON MILLER. HE WOULD ALWAYS BE THERE WHEN I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT I DID WRONG. AND I LOVED THE ANNUAL LETTER THAT WAS SENT SAYING SOMETHING TO THE EFFECT THAT, IF YOU GE SOMETHING FROM THE GOVERNMENT AND CAN'T REACH ME, DON'T WORRY WE HAVE TIME TO ANSWER." HE WAS ALWAYS THERE TO TALK AND SOLVE PROBLEMS. THE FIRST YEAR END AFTER DON RETIRED, I PANICED WHEN IT WAS TIME TO DO W-2S. I CALLED THE NEW ACCOUNTANT AND ASKED FOR FORMS (DON ALWAYS PROVIDED THE FORMS) THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T HAVE FORMS, THEY GENERATE IN THE COMPUTER!! THE ACCOUNTANTS TODAY ARE NOT LIKE THEY USE TO BE, THERE WAS ONLY ONE DON MILLER. GOD BLESS, CHRIS, OFFICE, LARSEN-MAYER PHARMACY

To a wonderful brother and a fine friend: We still can’t grasp that you are gone, Don. Over the years you and Ed have maintained that strong love that brothers only a couple of years apart develop. From your early years in Chicago to the adventures in Union Grove, you were always together. Although your careers took you in different directions, you always found ways to get together, including a great week motor-scooting around Okinawa while you were stationed there and Ed was in Korea. That was the same time that Laverne lived in the Grove and she and Carol became good friends as “military widows”. We will always remember your quick wit, wry charm, and loving ways. We fervently hope this is not the end of our story and we will meet on the other side.
