Craig A Birkholz is a Life Member of Junker-Ball Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1865 in Kenosha, WI.

"As a brave man, he marched away with the abiding faith in his God, his Country and his flag. The red of our country's flag was made redder by his bravery, the white more stainlessly pure by his motives which impelled him; and, in the starry field of our nation's glorious banner, the blue has been glorified by the service he has given for american ideals."

-The Final Inspection-
Author Unknown

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Thank Officer Craig Birkholz for your service to our country.

Birkholz Family and Friends:

I didn't know Craig, I just saw the story on the news, and it hit home, I lost my cousin (who was an active firefighter in Kansasville) on March 12th, from a snowmobile accident, he was 39 years young.  I found this on Facebook, however I don't know who wrote this but I find it absolutly beautiful.  I've shared it with my family and I'd like to share it with yours, and I hope that someday that you may find peace again.

When none of it made any sense and just as I was about to lose Faith, GOD whispered in my ear "Heaven needed a hero".

Craig was a remarkable young man and he'll be miss by those who knew him and those who didn't

Thank you for your service Craig and may you rest in peace.  God Bless You.

I, being a former U.S. Air Force Security Police Officer, my little brother, currently a Deputy with the Calumet County Sheriff's Office, my eldest brother, a former U.S. Army Chemical and E.O.D. Tech, also assigned K9 duty with the President, and my grandfather, a retired Captain of the Chicago Police Dept., know what Honor, Courage, and Duty stood for. We performed our jobs without seeking praise, or asking for gratitude. Thank you for allowing him to follow his heart, by serving his community, and his country. On behalf of the Pearson family, please accept our sincere and deepest sympathies. GOD called him to serve a higher purpose. Dear Craig's Family,

I knew Craig because I was a Community Advisor with him in Oshkosh.  We didn't serve in the same residence hall, have classes together or even know too much about each other.  We had to do a training presentation together and spent about two hours together.  During those two hours I knew instantly that I had a friend in Craig-- he was such a stand-up guy and truly one of the more respected CAs on campus.  My heart is heavy on hearing of his passing and I can't imagine the pain that you all are feeling.  My thoughts are with you all, and I just wanted to say that Craig was a great guy and made lasting impressions on everyone he met.

Posted on: March 22, 2011 | By: Bryan & Tanya Kimpel

We did not have the pleasure of knowing Craig, however, do know several on the city and county here in Fond du Lac...such a great group of unselfish men and women. A true hero in every sense of the word...I know it is painful and makes no sense right now but God needed him more than we did. God's blessings to you all.   The Kimpels

To Craig's Mother,

I hurt for you so very badly.  I was so afraid,..I understand the fear...I am so sorry you didn't get the outcome I did.  My Son was safe and I feel so horrible for you that yours wasn't.  I keep thinking of you and I want you to know, You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Your Son gave his life protecting our community.  He is a true Hero.  I so hurt for you.  I wish there was something I could do to ease your pain...but as a Mother, I know it is not possible.  Please know I am thinking of you and will keep praying for your strength.

Mother of a Fond du Lac Police Officer.

My sincere condolences go out to Craig's wife, family, friends, and all who are mourning his loss. Craig and I (along with our spouses) were in an RCIA program back in 08. When I heard about the shooting in Fond Du Lac and found out who the officers name was, I couldn't believe something like this happened, especially to someone we knew. My heart sank and I immediately began to think about Ashley. Ashley (and his family as well), if there is anything and I mean anything anyone needs please let me know. ((Hugs to all, wishing they were in person though.)) RIP Craig Birkholz. Gone, but not forgotten

Thoughts, love, and prayers,

The sorrow of the faithful
is not that of permanent loss,
but the tender sense of sadness
that comes in saying good-bye for now
to someone we love.
May today's sorrow give way
to the peace and
comfort of God's love.

It will be the little things
that you will remember,
the quiet moments,
the smiles, the laughter.
And although it may seem
hard right now,
it will be the memories
of these little things
that help to push
away the pain
and bring the smiles
back again.

Dear Paul and the entire Birkholz family:

Your hero, our hero, now God's hero.

I've been praying for you and your comfort during this very difficult time.  Not a moment has passed, since I read the news, that I haven't been praying for your healing.  May you find God's Grace through these difficult days.  Together you will find the purpose.  Much love to all of you.    -Heather (Durden) Eberle

To the Birkholz Family,

My deepest sympathies and condolences to you and your family in this horrible tradegy.  I was honored to have been a friend of Craig's in High School, in Orchestra and we shared some great memories in Post 509 Police Explorers.  Craig was a great, honorable and lovable guy.  He was a man that loved life, and the nicest guy, friendliest and kindest.  The world has lost a great man.  If there is anything I can do, do not hesitate to ask.  I know it may not be much, but if you need a cantor or vocal soloist for the Mass of Christian Burial, it would be an honor to serve.  May God be with you and your family always.

With deepest sympathy,

My deepest condolences to the family and fellow officers of Craig Birkholz As a retired police officer I took pride in knowing that Craig gave his life while aiding another human being.  The below pretty much sums up what Craig was all about.

The Creation of a Police Officer"

When the Lord was creating peace officers, he was into his sixth day of
overtime when an angel appeared and said,
"You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."

And the Lord said, "Have you read the spec on this order?  A peace officer has
to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter
homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not wrinkle his uniform.

"He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a
homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses,
and testify in court the next day.

"He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee
and half-eaten meals.  And he has to have six pairs of hands."

The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands... no way."

"It's not the hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord, "it's the
three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."

"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.

The Lord nodded. One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before he asks,
"May I see what's in there, sir?"  Another pair here in the side of his head for his
partners' safety. And another pair of eyes here in front that can look
reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, 'You'll be all right ma'am, when he knows it isn't so."

"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow."

"I can't," said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound
drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on a civil service paycheck."

The angel circled the model of the peace officer very slowly, "Can it think?" she asked.

"You bet," said the Lord. "It can tell you the elements of a hundred crimes;
recite Miranda warnings in its sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest
a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to
debate the legality of the stop... and still it keeps its sense of humor.

This officer also has phenomenal personal control. He can deal with crime
scenes painted in hell, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder
victim's family, and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't
sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the peace
officer. "There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told you that you were trying to
put too much into this model."

"That's not a leak," said the lord, "it's a tear."

"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.

"It's for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that
funny piece of cloth called the American flag, for justice."

"You're a genius," said the angel.

The Lord looked somber. "I didn't put it there," he said.

Somebody killed a police man today

and, a part of America died.

A piece of our country he swore to protect will be buried with him at his side.

The beat that he walked was a battlefield too, just as if he'd gone off to war.

Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast, ...to his name they will add a gold star.

Yep, somebody killed a policeman today, in your town or mine.

While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors, an officer put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street, and he stands at each new rookie's side.

He answered the call, of himself gave his all, and a part of America has died.

You will always be remembered and forever in our hearts!!!!

Semper Fi,

Police Officer Scot Knutson

My most sincere condolances to Officer Birkholz's wife and the rest of his family, and friends. Craig's heroism and desire to serve his community will add to his legacy as not only a community servant, but as a moral and compassionate man. As an officer myself, I feel as though a member of my family has been lost, even though I have never personally met him. In the coming days, weeks, and years, I can only pray everyday for the family to find comfort and healing in the time spent with Craig will never be lost. He will be patrolling the streets of heaven until he can be reunited with his loved ones. God Bless.

Please know that all of your Webster Stanley Elementary "family" members are sending you hugs and that we all care very deeply about you.  If there is anything we can do---please call.

Again, my most sincere sympathy and I wish I could be there to give you a hug and tell you in person how much I care--(I was planning on attending the memorial today but the weather is making this difficult).  May God give you strenth and courage to face what lies ahead.

May I extend my deepest symphathies to the family of Craig Birkholz.  Rose, Craig's grandmother, is a dear friend of mine. I came to know Rose during our service together on the Kenosha-Racine Magnificat Chapter, and are part of a prayer group together at St. Mary's.

Unfortunately, I did not get to know Craig personally, but am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. The world has lost a very honorable, well-respected, wonderful young man. His exemplary service to his country and community in which he lived is surely a testiment to the kind of moral character, values, and faith his parents and family members instilled in him from a very young age.

My heart goes out to each member of Craig's family, especially his wife.  May the Peace of Christ, which surpasses all understanding, be with you all. May all who were blessed to know Craig be comforted in knowing that this fine young man is surely with our Lord in Heaven.

Keeping you all in prayer.

I have been a lifelong resident of Fond du Lac for 37 years.  I can tell you growing up in this city it's the type of community where you don't lock your doors, yell 2 blocks away for your kids to come home, and shovel your neighbor's sidewalk "just because."  It wasn't until this tragedy that I realized how fortunate we are to have officers like Craig protecting our way of life.  Without him (and the rest of the FDL Police) my family wouldn't have the feeling of security people like Craig provide for us .

Thank you Ashley for allowing Craig to come to FDL and make an ever-lasting impression on our community.  His sacrifice will never be forgotten by this city; I can promise you that.  You and the rest of Craig's family and friends have my sympathy.  Keep the Lord close in your time of sorrow.

There are no medals; there are no tributes; there are no lofty speeches to assuage the grief as we honor our stricken and fallen heroes.  Who amongst us common men are our uncommon heroes?  Today, with sadness, we must answer with the name Craig.  Of whom do we ask “Who protects those who protect us?”  Today with pride we answer but with the acknowledgement of the many heroes who rushed to the sound of danger to help their injured comrades and protect citizens in peril.  Not often enough do we simply say “thank you”.  May God care for Craig and continue to watch over all our heroes who watch over us.
